The werewolves of Mexico, vocab, and Dia de los Muertos

October 13, 2024

Hola language learner,

¿Dulce o truco? We are deep into spooky season, bringing you stories about werewolves and sharing a video cheat sheet for the Day of the Dead. We've also rounded up some articles from around the web and recap our newest feature, Vocabulary Review. Let's dive in.

Featured story
Luna llena sobre Chiapas

A full moon, a blood-curdling howl, and a town that can't sleep. For the people in Coita, Mexico, coronavirus wasn't the only threat in 2020. In April, they started hearing howling around midnight, and what began as a rumor around town quickly turned into a mystery for an entire nation.

Digamos que por una semana la gente — creo que toda, hasta la más escéptica — cerraba sus puertas, ¿no?

Vocabulary Review

Last week we shared an update about our latest feature, Vocabulary Review. Based on feedback from language learners like you, we have reimagined the way you study words and phrases in Jiveworld.

With this new workflow, you'll revisit your saved vocabulary in story order, in the sentence where you heard it. As with with the rest of Jiveworld, it's an ears-first experience. You first identify the vocabulary words, hidden behind purple redaction bars, and then think about what they mean in context. You'll still find it a challenge, which is what you need to improve, but you'll be learning in context, the same way you'll encounter it in the real world.

You can try Vocabulary Review with or without a Jiveworld subscription through our story Miedo. Give it a whirl and, as always, send any feedback our way by replying to this email.

Featured Review

"Excellent app for intermediate and advanced learners of Spanish. It uses real, award winning podcast Radio Ambulante (by NPR) made for native speakers and makes it accessible to Spanish students. I listen and if I can't understand a section, read partial subtitles with definitions of key vocabulary. You can bookmark the vocabulary for future study! If I really can't understand I can unhide to see the whole phrase. It's like training wheels variable levels of help."
